- New motto: Lose the weight in 2008, so I can be feelin' fine in 2009! Statistics show that goals that rhyme with the current year are 72% more likely to be achieved. This goal entails multiple efforts:
- Get more exercise! Anna and I joined IU's RecSports, and are trying to go once a week at first, with the goal of eventually going 3-4 times per week. I'm also trying to get exercise outside of the gym by hiking and walking as much as possible. And, you know, there's always this.
- Eat real good-like! It's insane the amount of processed food that I put in my body. I'm going to make an effort to eat as much natural food as possible, as well as prepare healthy meals that can be taken to work for lunch.
- Take care of my brainses. I've struggled with depression, mood instability, hair-pulling, and body image issues for a long time. In the past year, it's become apparent to me that everyone has to make their own happiness. Letting my insecurities and depression determine my actions has gone on for long enough. It will take time, energy, and determination to retrain my thought process, but I'm confident that I can feel happier and more fulfilled. Booyah!
- I recently saw There Will Be Blood and Juno, both of which I greatly enjoyed. Daniel Day Lewis is so good at the cold, heartless, money-hungry murderer-type role. And the movie title was right. There was, indeed, blood.
- When I visited my big brother in San Francisco, I came across a project he made. A friend of his teaches kindergarten in Madison, WI. She partnered each student with an out of town penpal. The student had to write a letter to his/her penpal, as well as send a paper version of his/herself. The penpal then had to take pictures with the paper cutout, and send the pictures, along with a letter, back to the kindergartener. Adam got paired with a boy named Darryl. The entire project can be downloaded here (.pdf document). The first page is Darryl's original letter to Adam (probably one of the most hilarious things I've ever read), and the subsequent pages are Adam's response. I'm sure that Darryl got a cooler letter than any of his classmates.
- My buddy Phil wrote a really nice poem about some candidates:
Ron Paul is insane
That rhymes with McCain
I won't vote for no hillbilly
And I can't stand Billary!
Go Obama! - I've been trying to update my del.icio.us page as much as possible. If you're bored with your usual intarwebz circuit, bookmark my del.icio.us page, and watch as the list of super fun links gets longer!
- IU has a lot of amazing speakers/performers lined up for Black History Month. You can check them out here. I plan to see Dr. Terrance Roberts tonight, who was part of the Little Rock nine. In middle school, I read a book called Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Patillo Beals, also one of the Little Rock nine. It was (and still is) one of my favorite books, and I'm excited to get the perspective of another person in the cohort. Also, I often feel like a douchebag for not taking advantage of the amazing resources, performances, and other events that are available to me as a part of a large university.
- I'm also trying to read more. Bethany and Lydia started a book club amongst our awesome lady friends. Our first meeting was last Saturday, and the book we read was Jesusland. It was a quick read, and a really interesting look into New Horizon Youth Ministries and Escuela Caribe. Bethany even made CD's! This month's book is Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent. Reading is fun!
- I'm pretty sure I'm going to enroll as a full-time student in the fall, in IU's Masters in Public Health program. This will entail going even more into debt. I may end up living in a cardboard box in a dark alley, but at least I'll have a degree!
- My cat's breath still smells like the apocalypse.

Your buddy Phil is one fuckin' awesome poet!
4 out of 5 dentists agree that Phil should start blogging an original poem every week.
While there is no conclusive evidence, our analyses predict that Anna will likely re-blog Phil's poetic masterpieces.
